Great news for one of our 20th Anniversary History Gamechanger Honorees! Congratulations!Bridgeport, CT - The Mary & Eliza Freeman Center for History and Community is extremely proud to announce that they have been awarded a $750,000 grant from the National Park Service as part of the Historic Preservation Fund’s African American Civil Rights grant program, which funds preservation projects and efforts of sites tied to the struggle of African Americans to gain equal rights.

“We are the only awardee from New England. This is not just a grant, it is an honor! And a game changer,” said Maisa Tisdale, President and CEO. "It will allow historic preservation of the 1848 Eliza Freeman House to begin."

The mission of The Mary and Eliza Freeman Center is to restore, preserve, and ensure the viability of the Mary and Eliza Freeman Houses; teach the history of Black people in Connecticut; revitalize the surrounding South End community; and facilitate the preservation and revitalization of other African-American, and greater Bridgeport historic and preservation communities. The houses, once owned by sisters Mary and Eliza Freeman who were prosperous 19th century real estate developers of African and Paugussett heritage, are now the only surviving, original structures of Little Liberia (circa 1821). Located in what is now Bridgeport's South End, Little Liberia was one the nation's oldest settlements of free people of color. The Freeman Houses are listed on the National Register of Historic Places for their significance to African Americans and Women.

The National Park Service (NPS) awarded $21 million to 37 projects in 16 states as part of the Historic Preservation Fund’s African American Civil Rights grant program.

New Grating the Nutmeg Podcast out today! Listen: tinyurl.com/GTN166 🎧🎧

The 1964-65 New York World’s Fair attracted approximately 50 million visitors including many from Connecticut during its two April-to-October seasons. Many Connecticut companies had exhibits at the fair. Standouts include the Travelers Insurance Company’s building on the “Pool of Industry”. The building was designed to resemble the company’s trademark red umbrella. General Electric’s pavilion stood across from the Travelers. It included a Disney designed attraction called “Progressland”.

In this episode, we hear more from Dr. Jason Scappaticci, historian and Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Capital Community College in Hartford. Not only does Dr. Scappaticci have a keen interest in all things World’s Fair but he is an avid collector of souvenirs and mementos from the fair. #CT #history #podcast

Surveying parties were among the first new arrivals to set foot in the Western Reserve. Tasked with measuring the land and dividing it into townships, the surveyors created some of the earliest descriptions of “New Connecticut.” This talk examines the writings of surveyor Moses Warren Jr. and the successes, challenges, and tragedies experienced by his party.
