The airship Hindenburg passed over Connecticut 21 times during its 17-month service between 1936-37. Something we don’t see everyday!Auditions! Are YOU ready to haunt Old North Cemetery?

Actors are needed for West Hartford Hauntings, the museum's theatrical cemetery tours that take place the last two weekends in October.

There is a role for everyone! We are looking for a diverse group of actors to help tell the interesting and often scary stories of past West Hartford residents. Auditions will be held September 6 & 7 at the Noah Webster House from 6-8 p.m.

Timeline photosJoin us to celebrate Isabella Beecher Hooker, an early women's suffrage activist, as her legacy is added to the National Votes for Women Trail! At 10:00am, Isabella and her husband John will be honored with a trail marker plaque at their former home on Hawthorn Street in Hartford. At noon, Susan Campbell, author of "Tempest Tossed: The Spirit of Isabella Beecher Hooker," will discuss the 1877 Married Women's Property Law, and Isabella and John Hooker's work for women's rights. This joint program with the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center is part of the Legislative Landmarks Series.

Guests for Susan’s presentation should come to the Visitor Center, adjacent to our parking lot on Forest Street.

We expect parking to be tight and suggest folks park down in the Mark Twain House lot @ 385 Farmington Ave. if possible. That means attendees will need to walk up through Twain’s museum building to upper campus where the Stowe Center’s buildings are.

A great story about Yale students making difference in Texas!In 1909, dozens of students from Yale University’s School of Forestry spent weeks near Woodville on densely timbered land owned by lumberman J. Lewis Thompson. It was the third year that the students traveled from Connecticut to study Texas timber management and lumber operations.

Concurrent with the field school was a meeting of a yellow pine conservation committee, which included Thompson and Yale Forest School director Henry Solon Graves. They were joined by Gifford Pinchot, who served as the first chief forester of the United States. Pinchot and Thompson were both proponents for conservation measures in the lumber industry. The successful camp influenced Yale’s return to trip to Texas in 1911, this time near Trinity.

In Texas, environmental advocacy had far-reaching effects in succeeding years, from the legislature’s establishment of a forestry school at Texas A&M and the Texas Forest Service as a state agency to Civilian Conservation Corps camps established throughout East Texas in the 1930s. Thompson was later elected a state legislator, serving on the Conservation and Reclamation Committee. One of the 1909 students was Aldo Leopold, who became a noted environmentalist and author of A Sand County Almanac in 1949.

A historical marker commemorating the Yale forestry school was placed near the site in 1986.

Get to know local artist Corey Pane at his Artist Talk during First Friday on August 5.

Corey Pane is an artist from Connecticut. He spends most of his time breathing life into new creations, spanning a wide range of mediums and materials to create with, and focusing on the process and experience. Corey graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Hartford Art School and has shown his work in galleries and public, community spaces. He has done work with lots of bands and music related things, as well as professional athletes and other sports related things, like painting the cleats of many athletes.

He will be back at the NBMAA during our Art Summer Nights Community Day creating art live on August 18.
